Free tool: lookalike domain check
Has someone registered a domain that looks like yours?
Type your website. We try the typos and swaps a criminal would, a missing letter, a doubled one, an r and n for an m, and show which of them are already registered.
What it checks
Read the same way a mail server or a browser reads it
- Typos
- A letter missing, doubled, or swapped with its neighbour: the mistakes nobody notices when reading quickly.
- Lookalike letters
- An rn for an m, a 1 for an l, a 0 for an o. Easy to miss in an email address, easier still on a phone.
- Other endings
- Your name on .net, .co and the other endings people assume belong to you.
- When they were registered
- A lookalike registered last month deserves a closer look than one that has belonged to someone else for ten years.
Why it matters
What this has to do with a small business
The convincing version of a fake invoice does not come from your domain at all. It comes from one that looks almost the same, so every check the receiving server runs passes, because the criminal really does own that domain.
Knowing which lookalikes exist lets you warn your staff and customers by name, and is the evidence a registrar needs to take one down.
Questions
What people ask about this
Is a registered lookalike domain always malicious?
No. Some belong to unrelated businesses with a similar name, and some are parked by speculators. The ones to worry about are recently registered and have nothing to do with anyone you know.
Should I buy the lookalike domains myself?
The few closest ones, on the endings your customers use, are cheap and worth owning. Buying every possible typo is not practical; watching for new ones is.
Can I get a lookalike domain taken down?
Often, if it is being used for fraud. The registrar and the host both have abuse processes, and a clear record of what the domain is impersonating makes the request much faster.
How do you find them?
We generate the typos and swaps a person would plausibly miss and check which of them are live in public DNS, then look up when the newest were registered. Nothing is sent to the domains themselves.
